This is why I write

The internet is incredible. And, to think, it’s only been around for a couple of decades (insert shocked emoji).

A colleague recently commented that an idea she read about in my blog https://ateacherislikeacandle.wordpress.com/2020/08/11/what-this-candle-does-to-combat-dv/ spurred her to change a small but significant practice in her classroom. I was gobsmacked.

Because although I write stuff, put my thoughts out there for anyone to see, I’m still convinced that only my Mum, my Mum-in-law and my husband actually make a habit of reading my posts; after all, who has the time to sift through all of those words!?!

So what a thrill it was to hear that another teacher found something I jotted interesting enough to inspire her to take action.

Despite how much I love words and expect everyone else to be the same, most people don’t have the brain space or energy to sit down and scan through pages and pages of my frivolous notions in the search for nuggets of wisdom.

The fact that the World Wide Web makes it possible to publish to the world is amazing enough.

To think, then, that someone chose my blog post, amongst the thousands of bits of information we are bombarded with on a daily basis, to give their time towards; to digest and to take in, blows my mind.

And beyond that, that somehow that someone internalised a tidbit and it caused them to actually take a course of action that they otherwise may not have… that’s nothing short of a miracle.

So, THANK YOU, tech nerds of the past, for building us a platform that has so much potential for promoting growth and reflection and collaboration.

Sure, some people use the net and social media to judge, to criticise, to incite hatred and spread fear.

But my hope is that there are enough of us out there who are attempting to use our powers for good- that our messages of kindness, of self-love, of positivity, of hope – will nudge enough other revolutionaries to come out of hiding, and together we can drown out all of that other white noise.
